Get Certified! #DataVault 2.0 Certification in the US

Quick update – if you have been waiting to get your Data Vault 2.0 certification there are three sessions coming in the new few months right in the USA.  If you already know you want to do that, just skip down to the links and sign up!

Why Data Vault?

The Data Vault 2.0 architecture gives you an entire systems based approach to developing a true enterprise data warehouse and analytics architecture. It is very structured, pattern based, and highly repeatable. In Data Vault, each component does it’s duty, and does it well. The engineering components are generally relegated to automation tools (because it is pattern based), so human effort is not wasted in the mundane and can be used in more interesting, intelligent and thinking tasks. It’s a much better use of intelligent beings as well as machines.

Separating the concerns makes design and development not just easy, but fast.

As a side effect projects using Data Vault 2.0 have always saved a lot of money and have been extremely successful with their predictable goals. Plus they are very resilient so they tend to stay in use for years to come with little or no re-engineering! One of my systems has been running for 14 years now – and was even successfully re-platformed in that time.

How do you get in on this innovative approach?

If you want to learn more (and why wouldn’t you?), there are many upcoming opportunities across the world to get more information about Data Vault 2.0 (just check Twitter or LinkedIn – look for #DataVault). If you understand it, and you want to use it to leverage your own successes, you can even get certified (That comes with a responsibility though).

Here’s a list of upcoming opportunities to get DV 2.0 certified in the US:

Agile Amped Video – Live from Southern Fried Agile

A few weeks back I had the pleasure of attending and speaking at the Southern Fried Agile event in Charlotte, North Carolina.

It was quite an event with over 700 people in attendance. This is a primarily local event drawing people mostly from the Charlotte area. To say agile is big in that town is an understatement. There were some very large, name brand, companies present. If you are interested in learning more about taking an agile approach to development, I can highly recommend this event which draws excellent speakers (and vendors) from all over. (And the traditional southern fried lunch was pretty darn good too!)

My talk was on applying agile methods to data warehousing projects. I had a great audience of about 50 who wanted to learn how they might approach their DW projects differently.

In addition to giving my talk I got the opportunity to participate in my 2nd Agile Amped interview. This time my interviewer was Leslie from SolutionsIQ. We talked a lot about the rise of agile in the data warehousing space and how new technology solutions like Snowflake’s Cloud-Native Elastic Data Warehouse are helping organizations achieve a more agile deployment cycle.

Here is the entire interview for your viewing pleasure:

If you want to watch more Agile Amped video podcasts you can find them online here.

Enjoy.

Drill to Detail Podcast: Data Modeling, Data Vault, and Snowflake!

My good friend Mark Rittman has embarked on a new adventure as an independent analyst and consultant. As part of his new venture Mark started a new podcast series on iTunes that he calls Drill to Detail where he will feature interviews discussing a range of topics related to data warehousing, business intelligence, analytics, and big data.

I was honored to be asked to take part in this new venture and got to spend a hour with Mark a few weeks back recording what is now Episode 5 of the series. In this interview we talk about:

The podcast is about 60 minutes with each topic being about 20 minutes (so feel free to skip ahead if you are short on time). Please have a listen and let us know what you think in the comments below.

Cheers!

P.S. I will be speaking on these and related topics at a bunch of events over the next few weeks. Check out my speaking schedule and join me in person if you can!

Adventures in the Cloud

I just got back from a whirlwind tour that included a trip to San Francisco to visit the Snowflake HQ, attend the annual Oracle ACE Directors briefing, meetings and events at Oracle OpenWorld (OOW), speaking at OakTable World (OTW), then off to Chicago to speak at Enterprise Dataversity.

Yes it was packed. And lots of talk about cloud everything!

Thanks to the great folks at OTN (Roland and Jennifer) for hosting us again this year at Oracle HQ.

Here are a few highlights:

Morning Chi Gung

Now an annual event is doing Chi Gung by the lake behind the Sofitel with a few ACE Director friends before the *top secret* briefing.

Pre-OOW Athletics

Well, sort of. This year I walked the Golden Gate Bridge (5K) and took a dip in SF Bay in the 5th Annual Swim The Bay. Proud to say I have attended all 5 years of that event.

Nothing like a brisk morning walk to start the day!

Nothing like a brisk morning walk to start the day!

Then there is the brisk swim!

Then there is the brisk swim!

And this year, I got a pretty good size group to do Chi Gung on the beach after the swim (to warm ourselves back up!)

Time to get that chi flowing after the swim!

OTW 2016

I think this is the 3rd time I have presented at the un-conference run in parallel to OOW. But this year was the 1st time I did it as an Oaktable member! Gave my talk on Building a Virtualized ODS using SQL Developer Data Modeler.

No picture from that talk (sorry) but I did a very short Chi Gung set with the attendees at lunch time to get them moving out of their seats.

OTN Interview

This was the best part – getting to do an interview with my good friend Laura Ramsey from OTN about data modeling and data warehousing in the cloud. Check out my full interview here.

The Drake Hotel

For the Dataversity event in Chicago, I got to stay at the very classy Drake Hotel right on the lake shore with a great view.

Awesome View!

Oh, and my talk on Data Warehousing in 2016 and Beyond went great. I learned a lot in the various keynotes and even got an introduction to Data Science.

Well that is my little update for now.

Check my speaking page to see where I will be next!

Ciao.
