Snowflake at Stoweflake

20170519_073717

Every year the World Wide Data Vault Consortium (WWDVC) gets better and better! This year’s event was the 4th Annual and was again held at the lovely Stoweflake Mountain Lodge in Stowe, Vermont.

WWDVC_StoweflakeBalloon

And once again this year, my employer, Snowflake Computing, was a proud sponsor of the event. This year I even got to help with a hands on workshop with our ELT partner Talend as we walked folks through building a Data Vault in Snowflake using Talend!

WWDVC Sponsors

100 attendees got their minds filled and horizons broadened by an amazing slate of presentations given by great speakers from all over the world. Not only did we hear some real-life case studies from companies like Micron and Intact Financials (who have VERY large data vaults) but we even got to hear from someone at the US DoD (yes the Department of Defense!).

Then there were these mind-bending talks that challenged the most experienced in the audience:

– Measuring Data as an Asset (by Nols Ebersohn)
– How to get a DV project Approved (by Neil Strange)
– Uncertainty, Risk, & The Value of Information (by Brad Bergh)

And there were of course absolutely awesome keynotes from Tamara Dull (A Big Data Cheat Sheet for the Technically Savvy Data Professional) and from Scott Ambler we heard (very clearly!): Are You Agile or Are You Fragile?

What? You missed WWDVC 2017?

Well I guess you will have to wait for the 5th Annual WWDVC in 2018…

WWDVC Sunset

Can’t wait? You are in luck!

This year Dan hired professional videographers to record the entire event.

Yup, all the workshops, the keynotes, and all the presentations.

I have seen the videos and they came out great.

So, if you would like to join the elite group of 100 data vault aficionados that attended WWDVC17, you now have the chance to see and hear the same great content we all were exposed to. Then you can be the champion for brining Data Vault 2.0 to your organization.

You can purchase access to all the recordings right here.

#Kscope16 Blog Hop: #BigData and #AdvancedAnalytics Sessions Not to Miss

You are attending #KScope16 right?

Me too.

But there are so many sessions to choose from (mine included), which do you pick? How do you pick?

Well, I (and my fellow bloggers) are here to help you out with a Blog Hop. We are going to give you our top picks for for each track. In this post, I will give you my picks for the Big Data and Advanced Analytics track.

Big Data and Advanced Analytics Sessions

Why did I pick that this track? Really because it is a necessary adjunct to BI and Data Warehousing. In fact I find it hard to imagine that these two really won’t merge over the next few years (at my company, Snowflake, it really has already). Every company that is investing in BI/DW is also finding that they need to deal with Big Data too. And Advanced Analytics is, to me, the logical extension to BI.

So after looking at the agenda, really most of the sessions are of interest to me (sigh). But in reality I am sure I will not be able to attend them all, so here are my top 5 picks to see at KScope16:

  1. How to Build an Internet of Things Data Pipeline presented by Rex Eng
  2. Oracle Big Data Discovery: Extending into Machine Learning and Advanced Visualizations presented by Mark Rittman
  3. Introduction to Apache Kafka and Real-Time ETL presented by Gwen Shapira
  4. Getting Started with a Data Discovery Lab: You Don’t Have to Go Big to Gain Big presented by Kathryn Watson
  5. Getting Started with Oracle R and OBIEE presented by Kevin McGinley
Why those? Simply because they hit on all the top issues and topics that see being discussed (or written about) in the field, and I need to get a better grip on these things:
  • IoT – it is here already
  • Machine Learning – I am pretty clueless about this one so far
  • Kafka – ETL/ELT in the cloud
  • Data Discovery – the next step beyond BI
  • R – the language of choice for data scientists

And I actually know all of but one of the presenters, so am sure they will be very informative and lively talks.

The rest of the blog hop:

Thanks for attending this ODTUG blog hop!

Looking for some other juicy cross-track sessions to make your Kscope16 experience more educational? Check out the following session recommendations from fellow experts!

I hope this gives you some great ideas on what to see at KScope16!

See you in Chicago.

P.S. Don’t forget to make time to attend my Morning Chi Gung sessions down by the river to get each day started right with a clear mind and strong heart. Look for signs at the hotel.

Best #DataVault Event Ever!

Hard to believe it is less than 25 days to WWDVC 20016. I’m going. Are you?

If not, why not?

The 3rd Annual World Wide Data Vault Consortium is going to be epic!

What is the WWDVC?

It’s the only conference that focuses on everything happening in the Data Vault world, and this time, the keynote speaker is the father of Data Warehousing himself Bill Inmon. He created the industry in which we earn our daily bread.

The sessions start prior to the conference with a closed room meeting of Data Vault certified brainstorming. I will be there for sure to talk about Data Vault in the Cloud and of course experiences in virtualizing layers of the data vault architecture. I can hardly wait to discuss what I have learned this year with the other data vault brainiacs.

This is followed by a day of hands on workshops:

  • How to build a DV, a Data Mart, and End User Analytics from Scratch in 3 hours

  • Extend the power of the Data Vault to a real-time use case using a Spark based Lambda architecture

  • Generate code using the award winning Mapping Manager tool

And, these are all before the conference even starts.

There’s a lot more during the conference including the famous networking sessions which this event is known for. If you’ve already booked your seat, see you there. If not, what are you waiting for?

For something so valuable, you would expect a hefty price tag like the vendors do it.

Nope, it’s dirt cheap.

Check it out for yourself here:

WWDVC Registration

It’s a conference for Data Warehouse people with a Data Vault focus. Folks like you. It does have many things for the business person as well such as selling the Data Vault concept to the business owner (Peter Aiken), case studies including implementation of an Near Real Time DV 2.0 in the cloud, and a customer centric analytics case study, and more.

Give Your Brain a Treat

Some of the smartest people in Data Warehousing I know, have been in attendance in the past. This is a once a year chance to meet them in person, increase your network, and have a great time

This time it appears to have been kicked up a notch with the likes of John Giles (Universal Data Vault), Peter Aiken (In one instance their DV 2.0 helped save a client a whopping $25M/year), Bill Inmon (The father of the DW), Dale Anderson (Used the DV to build one of the world’s first DaaS).

There are also the repeat attendees like Mary Mink and Sam Bendayan (Used DV 2.0 to implement an NRT DW sourced from a NoSQL platform serving 3000+ customers), Michael Olschimke (Co-author of the new DV 2.0 book), Roelant Vos (Not only did he build his own automation, he likes to experiment … with architecture).

And … vendors of automation tools. Several of the world’s leading Data Warehouse Automation tools will not only be there, they are sponsoring (and buying dinner and drinks!).

And as if that is not enough, you will get to rub elbows with Dan Linstedt, the inventor of Data Vault, Sanjay (co-founder of LearnDataVault.com), and of course me, Kent, The Data Warrior.

So what are you waiting for? Go buy your ticket to the conference, book your room, and figure out how you will get there (hitch hike if you have to).

See you in Vermont!

P.S. Don’t forget Saturday at WWDVC is crazy shirt day.

P.P.S. The company I work for, Snowflake Computing, is a sponsor and is giving me a GoPro! to raffle off, so, don’t miss my talk on Thursday if you want in on the raffle.

The Right Choice: Why Spark + a Cloud Data Warehouse = Success

The first rule of data analytics for fast-growing companies? Measure all things. When putting in place a robust data analytics strategy to go from measurement to insight, you’ve got lots of options for tools — from databases and data warehouse options to new “big data” tools such as Hadoop, Spark, and their related components. But tools are nothing if you don’t know how to put them to use.
