#Kscope16 Blog Hop: #BigData and #AdvancedAnalytics Sessions Not to Miss

You are attending #KScope16 right?

Me too.

But there are so many sessions to choose from (mine included), which do you pick? How do you pick?

Well, I (and my fellow bloggers) are here to help you out with a Blog Hop. We are going to give you our top picks for for each track. In this post, I will give you my picks for the Big Data and Advanced Analytics track.

Big Data and Advanced Analytics Sessions

Why did I pick that this track? Really because it is a necessary adjunct to BI and Data Warehousing. In fact I find it hard to imagine that these two really won’t merge over the next few years (at my company, Snowflake, it really has already). Every company that is investing in BI/DW is also finding that they need to deal with Big Data too. And Advanced Analytics is, to me, the logical extension to BI.

So after looking at the agenda, really most of the sessions are of interest to me (sigh). But in reality I am sure I will not be able to attend them all, so here are my top 5 picks to see at KScope16:

  1. How to Build an Internet of Things Data Pipeline presented by Rex Eng
  2. Oracle Big Data Discovery: Extending into Machine Learning and Advanced Visualizations presented by Mark Rittman
  3. Introduction to Apache Kafka and Real-Time ETL presented by Gwen Shapira
  4. Getting Started with a Data Discovery Lab: You Don’t Have to Go Big to Gain Big presented by Kathryn Watson
  5. Getting Started with Oracle R and OBIEE presented by Kevin McGinley
 Why those? Simply because they hit on all the top issues and topics that see being discussed (or written about) in the field, and I need to get a better grip on these things:
  • IoT – it is here already
  • Machine Learning – I am pretty clueless about this one so far
  • Kafka – ETL/ELT in the cloud
  • Data Discovery – the next step beyond BI
  • R – the language of choice for data scientists

And I actually know all of but one of the presenters, so am sure they will be very informative and lively talks.

Agile Amped Interview

Last week I had a great time speaking and networking at the 1st every Agile Alliance Tech conference (#AATC2016), which was held at the newly renovated Marriott Crabtree.

The conference was a great success (IMHO), with some very interesting talks about TDD (Test Driven Development), Pair Programming, and Mob Programming (new to me!) among others. And of course my talk on Agile Data Engineering. You can catch up on all the action by reading the Tweet stream on #AATC2016.

While there I had the honor of being interviewed about my thoughts related to agile, data warehousing, and data vault. (And of course I mentioned Snowflake too!). The interview was hosted by SolutionsIQ and is now included in their online library of video podcasts about agile topics, called Agile Amped (a FREE resource).

The Data Warrior Speaks 2016: Updated

As expected, I have been booked to speak a few more places this year.

Here is my updated speaking schedule as of today:

RMOUG Training Days 2016 – February 9-11 in Denver, CO (I have 2 hour deep dive on Feb 9th). Register here.

TDWI Nashville – March 8th in Nashville (of course). I will be discussing how to apply Agile Methods to Data Warehousing. You can get more details (soon) and sign up here.

Tampa Analytics Professionals – March 22 at the St Pete College Epicenter. Again talking about how to apply Agile Methods to Data Warehousing. You can get details and sign up here.

Agile Alliance Technical Conference 2016 – April 7-9 at the Raleigh Marriott Crab Tree Valley in Raleigh, North Carolina. I will present Agile Data Engineering: Introduction to Data Vault Data Modeling on Thursday April 7th. The Super Early Bird and Early Bird rates are still available. Register here.

Data Warrior Agenda for 2016

Hard to believe 2015 is almost over.

It was a very busy year for me:

All of that has entailed a lot of air miles! This year I have visited:

  1. Denver (several times!)
  2. Salida, Colorado
  3. Hollywood, Florida,
  4. Raleigh, NC
  5. Charlotte, NC (thanks to Lynn Winterboer for that one!)
  6. San Francisco
  7. Redwood City, California (Oracle HQ)
  8. Austin (drove this one)
  9. Minneapolis/ St Paul (thanks to Redpill Analytics mostly)
  10. Kansas City, Missouri
  11. Portland, Maine
  12. St Albans, Vermont
  13. Stowe, Vermont
  14. San Mateo, California (HQ for Snowflake Computing)

And that was just work related! Family trips took me to:

  1. Galveston (beach!)
  2. South Padre Island, TX (more beach!)
  3. Road trip to Central NY:
    1. Joplin, Missouri
    2. Hannibal, Missouri (Mark Twain museum)
    3. Chicago (to see robots at the Museum of Science and Industry)
    4. Sandusky, Ohio (just to sleep)
    5. Fulton, NY (to see my dad)
    6. Old Forge, NY (summer vacation in the mountains!)
    7. Huntsville, Alabama (NASA Rocket Center!)
  4. Who knows – the year is not over yet!
