#Kscope16 Blog Hop: #BigData and #AdvancedAnalytics Sessions Not to Miss

You are attending #KScope16 right?

Me too.

But there are so many sessions to choose from (mine included), which do you pick? How do you pick?

Well, I (and my fellow bloggers) are here to help you out with a Blog Hop. We are going to give you our top picks for for each track. In this post, I will give you my picks for the Big Data and Advanced Analytics track.

Big Data and Advanced Analytics Sessions

Why did I pick that this track? Really because it is a necessary adjunct to BI and Data Warehousing. In fact I find it hard to imagine that these two really won’t merge over the next few years (at my company, Snowflake, it really has already). Every company that is investing in BI/DW is also finding that they need to deal with Big Data too. And Advanced Analytics is, to me, the logical extension to BI.

So after looking at the agenda, really most of the sessions are of interest to me (sigh). But in reality I am sure I will not be able to attend them all, so here are my top 5 picks to see at KScope16:

  1. How to Build an Internet of Things Data Pipeline presented by Rex Eng
  2. Oracle Big Data Discovery: Extending into Machine Learning and Advanced Visualizations presented by Mark Rittman
  3. Introduction to Apache Kafka and Real-Time ETL presented by Gwen Shapira
  4. Getting Started with a Data Discovery Lab: You Don’t Have to Go Big to Gain Big presented by Kathryn Watson
  5. Getting Started with Oracle R and OBIEE presented by Kevin McGinley
Why those? Simply because they hit on all the top issues and topics that see being discussed (or written about) in the field, and I need to get a better grip on these things:
  • IoT – it is here already
  • Machine Learning – I am pretty clueless about this one so far
  • Kafka – ETL/ELT in the cloud
  • Data Discovery – the next step beyond BI
  • R – the language of choice for data scientists

And I actually know all of but one of the presenters, so am sure they will be very informative and lively talks.

The rest of the blog hop:

Thanks for attending this ODTUG blog hop!

Agile Amped Interview

Last week I had a great time speaking and networking at the 1st every Agile Alliance Tech conference (#AATC2016), which was held at the newly renovated Marriott Crabtree.

The conference was a great success (IMHO), with some very interesting talks about TDD (Test Driven Development), Pair Programming, and Mob Programming (new to me!) among others. And of course my talk on Agile Data Engineering. You can catch up on all the action by reading the Tweet stream on #AATC2016.

While there I had the honor of being interviewed about my thoughts related to agile, data warehousing, and data vault. (And of course I mentioned Snowflake too!). The interview was hosted by SolutionsIQ and is now included in their online library of video podcasts about agile topics, called Agile Amped (a FREE resource).

Here is the interview:

Here is a direct link to the interview on the SolutionsIQ site.

Thanks to SolutionsIQ and Neville Poole for doing the interview and to Agile Alliance for inviting me to speak.

Agile On!

P.S. Keep your eyes open for #AATC2017 as I am pretty sure we will do this again next year!

P.P.S. Before the conference I gave another interview where I talked about why we need Agile Data Engineering.

P.S. I will also be working the Snowflake booth at both the Gartner BI and Analytics Summit this March in Dallas, and the HIMSS event in Las Vegas at the end of February. Stop by and say “hi” if you will be at either of these events.

Data Warrior Agenda for 2016

The Data Warrior Goes to Oracle Open World 2015 (#OOW15)

Yes boy and girls, it is that time of year again. Time for the BIG show in San Francisco – OOW15

I will as usual, attend, but only for a few days this year (been away from home too much).

My Talk

I will be presenting my session Worst Practices in Data Warehouse Design (UGF9985) on Sunday at 10:00 AM in Moscone South, room 274 (courtesy of ODTUG!).  This will be a quick one as I only have 45 minutes to do a one hour talk. Yikes!

If you will be in SF by Sunday, be sure to come by and say “hi.”

Morning Chi Gung?

As usual, I will try to gather some folks near either Union Square or maybe by Yerba Buena Gardens for a little morning relaxation with some Chi Gung (Qigong) . Most likely around 7 AM for 30 minutes. Probably Saturday, Sunday, and Tuesday, Follow me on twitter @kentgraziano and look for #MorningChiGung #OOW15 for final time and location.

Monday for sure though, I will be doing a shortened session on the beach at the 4th Annual OOW SF Bay Swim around 9:15 AM or so. Nothing like a little chi movement to warm you up before and after jumping in the bay.

The Rest of My Schedule

Other Fun Stuff

Along with the educational sessions is of course the opportunity to network with folks. I expect I will be doing that as much as possible. There is the annual Oracle ACE dinner, and who know what else. I am sure I will find plenty to keep me busy.

Since I arrive early for the Oracle ACE Directors annual briefing at HQ, I know I will be downtown Friday evening and all day Saturday. Drop me a note if you will be there too and want to hang out and see some of the sites and eat some top notch grub.

Cheers.
