Free Introduction to Data Warehousing the Data Vault Way

My good friend Dan (@dlinstedt) has put together a sweet set of three videos to introduce everyone to the wonderful world of Data Vault.

When you sign up you will get a set of email messages from Dan discussing the Data Vault Approach to data warehousing. You get access to three videos about the architecture, the methodology, and the modeling technique.

Plus you get free downloads of the first few chapters of the data vault book Super Charge Your Data Warehouse.

So if you have always wanted to learn more about Data Vault, but don’t have the budget for a full on class, this offer will get you headed in the right direction.

Head on over to the Learn Data Vault site now. It is all free.

(NB: this is an affiliate link. If you eventually buy the book or some other training off Dan’s site, I will get a small piece of the action. Not enough to retire mind you, but it might buy lunch.)

The videos are pretty cool. Enjoy.

Are you certifiable?

Just a quick note to let everyone know that Dan Linstedt, (inventor of the Data Vault Model and Methodology) has announced that he will be teaching a live Data Vault 2.0 Certification Class on July 29th in St Albans, Vermont.

This class will cover all the new DV2.0 standards which incorporate big data, and NoSQL as options for implementation.

So do you have what it takes to become a Certified Data Vault Practitioner – CDVP2?

Check out these details:

Concepts that are covered include the following:

  • Implementation (ETL & SQL) best practices – structured, performance and restartability
  • Data Integration Strategies – real time, big data, and unstructured
  • Overview of Architecture – 3 tier systems architecture
  • Overview of Methodology – agile project planning & delivery
  • Overview of Data Vault Modeling – DV tables, patterns, business vault
  • Foundation of NoSQL & Big Data – where it fits, key structures, parallel loading
  • DV2.0 Methodology (Agility, Roles and Responsibilities, Architecture, CMMI Level 5)
  • DV2.0 Structure Changes
  • Managed Self Service BI
  • Loading Templates (including DV2.0 performance improvements)
  • Business Vault – introduction and overview, application & use

The new course relies heavily on the Super Charge your Data Warehouse book. Students must have completed reading the book before attending class. The class will spend minimal time covering the structural details of the Data Vault itself, and will focus more on the application of the Data Vault, the methodology (or project implementation), and the overall architecture. Including a look at managed self-service BI.

Hurry – Only 24 Hours Left to Get a Free Conference Registration

As I have written before, I love Oracle User Groups.

My two most favorite groups are the Oracle Development Tools User Group (ODTUG) and the Rocky Mountain Oracle Users Group (RMOUG).

These two groups put on what are arguably the best annual conferences for users of Oracle technology – by users, for users.

Over the past 20+ years I have attended most of their events – and NEVER paid a registration fee.

This was very helpful when my boss said there was no money for training. I just said “I get in free”.

So would you like to attend one of these events for FREE?

All you have to do is submit an abstract to present a session. If you get selected, your registration fee is waived. This is worth over $1000.

But you have to hurry, the deadline for submission is Monday October 15th, 2012.

Details:

RMOUG Training Days is  February 11-13, 2013 in Denver, Colorado. (Right in the middle of ski season!)

Go here to submit an abstract.

ODTUG’s KScope event will be June 23-27th in wonderful New Orleans.

Go here to submit an abstract.

I have submitted multiple abstracts to both events.

So what are you waiting for – go submit now!

See you in Denver and New Orleans in 2013.

P.S. My Kindle ebook  started out as a user group presentation. No telling what you might do with your presentation.

Want to be a Data Vault implementation Black Belt?

Are you tired of seeing failed data warehouse projects?

Tired of being part of the problem or having to clean up after someone else messed it up?

Well, now you can be part of the solution and kick implementation failures in the <you know what>.

I am pleased to tell you that my good friend, Dan Linstedt, creator of the Data Vault, has just launched a new, online, Data Vault training portal.

And it is now open to the public!

The first class you can get is on Data Vault implementation.

It is way cool!

The quality is excellent and the material is even better (including material I have never seen in a class). Dan provides tons of information about not only the right way to implement the Data Vault but gives examples of how he has done it and gives you code templates (for multiple databases) you can implement on a real project.

Why would you want to sign up for this training? Well lots of reasons:

  1. You read the Data Vault modeling book, but can’t quite see how to load the model after it is built.
  2. It’s less expensive than face to face training. No time off or travel required!
  3. You can rewind and watch the training at your own pace (no need to feel behind or ahead of the rest of the class).
  4. You get access to the course for an entire year instead of 1 to 3 days in a lecture format. So you can watch it over and over again.
  5. You get to ask Dan questions directly (and you can even engage and interact with other students).
  6. Dan is going to host tele-seminars for members only where you can ask him any question (without having to pay his normal consulting fees).
  7. It is currently on sale at a huge discount.

This is really a great deal.

So, what are you waiting for?

Head on over to the site now and get started! (If you are ready to buy and want to skip the sales stuff, just scroll to the bottom and hit “add to cart”. So why are you still here?)

You can’t get this material anywhere else and get direct access to the guy that invented it.

Doesn’t get much better than that.

Later.

Announcement: Data Vault Model & Methodology Certification Class in Montreal!

I just found out today that my good friend Dan is going to teach a Data Vault certification class later this month in Montreal, Canada.

Guess what? I have already registered!

What a great opportunity to learn about Data Vault from the guy who invented it.

Plus you will get to be part of an elite group of data warehouse professionals who are actually certified as Data Vault Practitioners -assuming you pass the test of course 😉

This is going to be the only such class he will teach this year in North America so this is a rare opportunity. The class is being coordinated by agileDSS in Montreal. You can get details and register here. Don’t waste any time: the class starts January 25th and there are only 5 seats left as of today.

So, you might ask why I am going to this class – “Didn’t you coauthor a book with Dan and help him with the most recent one?”

Why yes, yes I did.

So why am I going to spend my hard earned money and take time away from my current gig to fly from Houston, Texas to Montreal to take this class?

  1. Dan is my friend. I want to support him in his business ventures.
  2. Dan is my friend. I haven’t seen him face-to-face since he moved from Colorado to Vermont and I moved from Colorado to Texas. This is a rare opportunity for us to catch up a bit in person.
  3. Dan is some kind of genius. He invented a new way to model data warehouse structures and has proven its effectiveness over the last 10+ years. It is not often you get to learn from someone like that (live and in person).
  4. I can always stand a refresher course. I have not been in a formal Data Vault class, taught by someone else, in close to 10 years. I am pretty sure Dan has come up with some new variations, interpretations, techniques, and in-the-trenches war stories since then!
  5. I love networking with other data warehouse professionals in person.
  6. I have never been to Montreal.
  7. It’s a new year. Time to invest a bit in my own professional development.
  8. Oh, and did I mention, Dan is my friend.

So why don’t you sign up too and join me in Montreal? I guarantee it will change the way you do data warehousing.

And you get to hang out with me and Dan! Such a deal!

So go to the link, register, and tell them the Oracle Data Warrior sent you.

See you in Montreal!

Kent
