New Year, New Name, Same Mission

Happy New Year!

Looks like it will be another busy one. So, let’s get going!

Yes, I just changed the name of my blog from “Oracle Data Warrior” to “The Data Warrior.”

Why?

Well, for one, my company name is Data Warrior LLC, so it seemed to make sense.

Plus over the last few years quite a few of you that I see at conferences and such, simply call me “data warrior”. As in,

Hey, Data Warrior, how’s the battle going?

And after a some recent conversations and pondering, I realized that, while I am an Oracle ACE Director, and a fan of Oracle databases and tools, the things I write about and the work I do, is really database agnostic.

Think about it…

Regardless of the database, or data modeling tool, good design principles,  architecture, and standards transcend the technology.

There are standards and best practices that are applied in developing all of these models that have nothing to do with technology. (Yes, implementing them efficiently is another story).

Some of my favorite topics, like FKs in data warehouses, and naming standards, are somewhat philosophical, and apply in many situations.

But never fear, you will still see posts on my favorite tool, SQL Developer Data Modeler,  and reports from all the main Oracle events (RMOUG, ODTUG, OOW).

And there will be the occasional rants about badly behaving data models and data modelers.

And of course Data Vault, Agile BI, and varying forms of virtualization.

Plus the occasion inspirational quote.

So while the name has changed, the content will not; the mission will not.

My mission is still to Change the World, One Data Model at a Time.

Let’s see what the year will bring us.

P.S. Look for future posts about upcoming talks I am giving, and at least one surprise new offering.

So you want to be a Presenter? Abstract selections for 2015 are open!

You say you want to present and share your knowledge with the world (or at least your little corner of the world)…

Your boss says there is no $$$ to pay for any technical conferences…

You want to be a rock star and have adoring fans “LIKE” your blog or web site…

Have I got a deal for you!

All you have to do is write some awe inspiring abstract with a catchy, SEO’d title and you are on your way to geek super-stardom.

Well, assuming the committee likes what you have to say and it is highly relevant to the target audience.

Want to give it a go? Then here are my two favorite Oracle user conferences that you MUST submit too, and if you are a Data Vault kind of person, one more to try for.

Rocky Mountain Oracle Users Group Training Days 2015

Held in Denver, Colorado in the middle of ski season, this one is hard to beat for so many reasons…

In 2015 it will run from February 17-19 at the Colorado Convention Center.

Abstract submissions are open and run until October 2, 2014. So get a move on!

Submit here: http://www.rmoug.org/training/2015-abstract-submission/

ODTUG KScope15

Also deemed a top Oracle tech event with huge Oracle ACE and ACE Director presence (like RMOUG). This year the event will be in the warm environs of Hollywood, Florida from June 21-25, 2015.

Now the catch here is that you have to be a member to submit an abstract. You are a member already, right?

If not, join today! They do have a FREE Associate member class which is good enough to submit.

But the membership fee is only $99 a year, so why not be a full member? Just say’n…

Anyway you can submit an abstract here: http://www.odtug.com/e/sx/in/eid=17

2nd Annual World Wide Data Vault Consortium

If you are an uber Data Vault geek, we want you to present and tell us your story!

The 2015 event will be held May 28-30 and the lovely Trapp Family Lodge near Stowe,Vermont (yes THAT Trapp Family)

If you don’t want to present then just attend. Registration is also open: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/wwdvc-world-wide-data-vault-consortium-2015-registration-12073703773

Dan is still accepting session proposals. There are only a few slots left! Apply NOW.

EMAIL TO: DanLinstedt@gmail.com

Want to submit a 1 hour presentation topic?
Please contact Dan directly, submissions are due before September 30th, 2014.

Want to SPONSOR a night-time dinner / event?
Please contact Dan directly,  there are 2 nightly sponsorships available, and 1 keynote speaker sponsorship available.

Well those are my top picks and the ones I will be applying to.

Good luck and see you at one of these events!

Better Data Modeling: #DataVault 2.0 Virtualising your Data Vault – Satellites

Guest Blog Link: Virtualising your Data Vault – Satellites

This is a MUST READ for anyone wanting to get Agile in their DW/BI program and for anyone doing Data Vault 2.0.

Actually anyone doing Data Vault 1.0 can benefit from the technique as well.

Roelant Vos has done quite a bit on trying to virtualize and automate data warehouses using DV 2.0 (especially since the WWDVC in Vermont.). Please check out his blog and follow him on twitter too.

Cheers

Data Vault 2.0 Training: Upcoming Public Classes

After my well-attended talk at #EDW14 in Austin this week (which was a GREAT event), a lot of you asked about where you could find a public class on Data Vault 2.0.

At the time I knew of none, but on my drive back home I was talking to Dan Linstedt (inventor of Data Vault) and he had great news for all of us: Dan will be teaching not one, but two public classes this summer!

Woohoo!

So the first one will be for all our friends in Europe. It will be June 2-4 in Helsinki, Finland. This will be a full 3-day Data Vault 2.0 Bootcamp class where you will get all the details on DV 2.0 modeling and methodology. If you want there is even an option to get the coveted CDVP2 after the class via a private certification exam.

This will be the 1st DV 2.0 class in Europe. So if you are in Europe, or have friends there, head over here for more details: http://danlinstedt.com/news/2014dv2bootcampfinland/

Following the class, Dan will be giving a keynote at the Oracle User Group Finland event on June 5-6 (I will be presenting there too!). To find out about OUGF check in over here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/ougf-2014-harmony-tickets-10410222255 (scroll down to see the description and the agenda).

For the folks in USA and North America, Dan’s second public class will be  in Cincinnati, Ohio later in the summer. Details on this are not final yet. I will update this post as they become available.

So there you have it – DV 2.0 classes coming your way.

Cheers!

Kent

P.S. If these do not work for you you can always talk to Dan or myself about scheduling a private onsite class for you organization.

Live from the 1st Annual World Wide Data Vault Consortium: Day 3

Well it was the last day of the 1st annual WWDVC. What an event is has been. (See recap of Day 1 and Day 2, here and here)

Agility and Data Vault

Long time data vault advocate Tom Breur opened our closing day with a talk about how we should strive to build the right product and build it right without creating more technical debt in the process.

He said agile is about taking small steps not about being faster. If we do this right, the solution we deliver should generate more legitimate business requirements.

He encouraged us all to read the Theory of Constraints and The Goal (I have), and to learn about lean delivery. Our goal should be to deliver continuously and consistently. The shorter the sprint, the better.

Next he went on to tell us his conclusion that while building a Kimball based solution may appear to deliver more value to the business, it takes too long. And in the end it is a fragile and rigid solution subject to major re-work when requirements change after deployment.

We can deliver value, quicker, using the data vault method. And what we deliver can be done incrementally and more easily added to without re-work.

Tom drew this to show how much quicker we can deliver some value sooner

Data Vault Case Studies

John Sells and Josh Bartells from Data Blueprint shared with us their experiences implementing data vault solutions for their clients.

It was great to hear about their success stories from the field and see how they addressed the challenges many of us have faced.

Data Vault Modeling Tool

MID GmbH from Germany has a pretty nice modeling tool with built in capabilities to support modeling a data vault solution from stage tables through reporting (including using the new DV icons).

Concluding Remarks

Dan closed out this inaugural event with a few remarks, some memories, thanks, and talk about plans for doing this again next year.
